El Harissa is a family owned and operated cafe, restaurant, market, and catering service. The mission of El Harissa is to share the cuisine and culture of North Africa and the greater Mediterranean region with our community. We serve unique and bold dishes that cannot be found elsewhere in Michigan. Our food is delicious, healthy, expertly prepared, and affordable. We are a growing business, and thus are hoping to grow our team with strong, reliable, and passionate individuals.
We are looking for skilled and highly motivated individuals to help prepare and serve our food. This is a dynamic position, one that will ask you to balance multiple responsibilities. In addition to taking orders, preparing dishes, and maintaining the space, successful applicants will be tasked with building connections with our customers, helping foster the welcoming and inclusive environment that we have built at El Harissa. As we move forward, special projects will become available, and members of our team will be expected to take initiative and help see them through. We want individuals who are quick learners, who can work independently, and who take pride in their work. Initiative will be rewarded. This will be a part-time position, around 25-30 hours/week, with the possibility of transitioning to full-time in the future.
This is an opportunity to learn about North Africa, a unique region that lies at the crossroads of the Middle East, Subsaharan Africa, and Mediterranean Europe. Our menu traces the shared history of many of these nations; from Tunisia, through to the Levant, Greece, Italy, Andalusia, and back around to Morocco. Our namesake, “Harissa,” is emblematic of the food that we share, as it is one of many ingredients and techniques that have been traded throughout the region, and that can now be found on dining tables miles away from their native land. Dining and working at El Harissa is itself an educational experience. We want to expose people to the diverse flavors of the region that have yet to make an impact on the American palate. We challenge our customers and staff to step outside of their comfort zones and broaden their culinary horizons.
Successful applicants will gain valuable exposure to the challenges of managing and growing a restaurant. This job offers a window into the rigors that face many small businesses and startups throughout America, and the necessary lengths that these businesses must take to succeed. Skills acquired while working at El Harissa will be applicable to many careers, within and outside of the food industry.
