Transmission Planning Engineer

This position will be located at the Alabama Power Corporate Headquarters in Birmingham, AL .

Summary

This position performs transmission planning analysis on the Southern Company bulk power system, which includes regional planning and interface analysis studies with neighboring transmission system, as well as generation interconnection (GI), transmission service requests (TSR), eastern interconnection-wide studies (covering the central/eastern transmission systems in the United States), generator retirements/additions, etc. The studies and recommendations are coordinated with the transmission-owning Operating Companies and other impacted parties (where applicable) and projects are budgeted as appropriate.

The engineer will be responsible for performing studies in order to identify potential transmission system constraints under multiple generation and load scenarios, test the robustness of previously identified transmission improvements, and/or identify new transmission improvements to ensure compliance with NERC, SERC, and Southern Company transmission planning criteria. These studies involve scoping relevant baseline assumptions, building models for the identified scenarios, running power flow analysis, identifying solutions and costs, and summarizing results in to final reports and presentations. The engineer will work with multiple groups to identify transmission improvements and evaluate them based on benefit, feasibility, and cost effectiveness in order to ensure the best and most economical solution.

Transmission Planning engineers must be able to coordinate and work closely with various groups including other teams within Transmission Planning, Policy, Operations, Operating Company transmission and generation departments, etc. in order to gain input and consensus on transmission expansion planning decisions. They will also be responsible for presenting study results to management and customers for information and approval. The engineer will have the opportunity to work on a variety of study types and processes that are very relevant to current industry activities and issues and impactful to future business decisions being made by Southern Company and the Operating Companies.

  • Scope and perform computer-modeled, power-flow studies for the bulk transmission system

  • Coordinate with others in Transmission Planning to develop reliable, innovative and cost-effective solutions to transmission system limits identified from studies

  • Understand transmission problems, solutions (including alternatives), and provide informative reports and presentations related to identified issues and associated system improvements

  • Develop innovative and cost-effective solutions to transmission system problems identified in analysis, including coordinated studies with neighboring transmission systems

  • Coordinate with multiple groups and internal customers within SCS and the Operating Companies, as well as external parties

  • Some overnight travel may be required (

Experience Requirements

  • General Transmission, Distribution and/or Resource Planning knowledge and related experience is desired

  • Prior exposure to PSS/E, MUST or TARA software and/or computer modeling of electrical power systems is desired

  • Ability to identify, implement and/or recommend process improvements strongly preferred

  • Working knowledge of programming languages such as Python, C#, and Visual Basic.net and/or experience with database applications (SQL Server, MS Access) is a plus
