Senior Cost Estimator – Wausau, WI 54401


Prepare cost estimates for projects as a basis for pricing quotations. Work involves diversity of products of complex design where application of established estimating practices is more difficult and wide scope of manufacturing operations and variations. Originate, maintain, and revise all cost data and records contingent on changing conditions, methods and other factors involved. Prepare final estimates for approval. Assign and check work of less senior estimators. Position requires a technical knowledge of manufacturing practices, material types and cost estimating procedures.


  • Evaluates customer request for proposal (RFP) and request for quotation (RFQ)
  • Determines estimate approach based on type of estimate required
  • Create quote/bid and related documents
  • Assist with training junior estimating associates
  • Calculates labor costs using labor metrics and historical data
  • Coordinates the collection of costing information from departments within the organization
  • Assist with maintaining historical cost information
  • Assist with assessing cost effectiveness of products, projects or services by tracking actual costs relative to bids as the project develops
  • Obtain quotes from outside suppliers for custom materials as required
  • Interact with internal and external customers for project strategy, customer experience and quote management

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Minimum of four (4) years of estimating experience; commercial construction experience preferred
  • Costing and pricing experience required



  • Nonstandard non-configured product cost estimates
  • Wide scope of manufacturing operations and variations
  • Experience with comparing actual costs with estimates and analyze variations
  • Ability to work independently
  • Requires advanced technical knowledge of manufacturing practices, material identifiers and cost estimating procedures
  • Knowledge of all elements of cost from project conception to completion, including take-off, construction document review and preparing final estimates for approval
  • Working knowledge of obtaining / using cost data and vendor quotes
  • Reading of and quantification from technical documents
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Assist with labor productivity analysis
  • Sound mathematical and numeracy skills
  • Strong IT systems knowledge and skills including intermediate Excel skills
  • Experience of using spreadsheets and complex estimating, pricing models and cost management tools

  • Operations Analysis – analyzing needs and product requirements to create a design
  • Critical Thinking – using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
  • Systems Analysis – determining how a system should work and how changes in conditions, operations, and the environment will affect outcomes
  • Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions
  • Systems Evaluation – identifying measures or indicators of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance, relative to the goals of the system
  • Judgment and Decision Making – considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one


This position has no supervisory responsibility.


Position is mostly within an office environment with occasional visits to the manufacturing floor. The noise levels in the work environment are usually moderate. Travel requirement is limited, but must be available as needed.


Regularly required to sit or stand, reach, bend and move about the facility. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
