General Summary:

  • The Surgical Prep/Recovery Room Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for providing and directing individualized care during the immediate preoperative and postoperative period utilizing the nursing process and established standards of care. This requires assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the care of patients through clinical knowledge and skills. Will treat all customers with actions that contribute to high levels of customer service.
  • This position reports to the Surgical Prep and Recovery Coordinator.
  • This position has no direct reports.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Selects and prepares appropriate supplies for the pre-operative and post-operative based on the OR schedule, clinical knowledge, and the physicians plan of care.
  • Has a clear understanding of the anesthetic agents and medications used by Anesthesia
  • Able to recognize, communicate, delegate, and coordinate management of emergent situations in a rapid and effective manner.
  • Provide direct and indirect patient care using the nursing process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient requirements as directed by the physician; use medical equipment in accordance with standards; demonstrate continued competence in all facets of ambulatory surgery.
  • Pre- Operative:
  • Accurately and thoroughly completes and reviews the pre-operative assessment prior to procedure time to include but not limited to:
  • Identification of patient
  • Completion of consent forms
  • Review of chart for completeness
  • Contacts appropriate individuals regarding any abnormalities
  • Assessing of health status of patient through use of history and physical and nursing assessment as related to:
  • Site preparation
  • Nutritional status
  • Emotional status
  • Patient?s understanding of post-operative procedures
  • Time of last oral intake
  • Patient?s perception of the procedure
  • Allergies
  • Health aide devices (dentures, etc.)
  • Interviews patient and completes patient history
  • Post-operative teaching instructions to patient and family
  • Documents all the above on appropriate form
  • Carries out any pre-operative physician orders
  • Performs peripheral IV punctures if ordered
  • Completes pre-operative phone calls as directed by supervisor
  • Post Anesthesia Care Unit ? Phase 1 & Phase 2:
  • Is proficient in assessing the patient?s level of anesthesia emergence in accordance with policies and procedures and ASPAN standards by:
  • Receiving report from OR Nurse and/or Anesthesia
  • Monitors vital signs and reports initial and any abnormalities to Anesthesiologist
  • Assesses patient?s respiratory, cardiovascular, circulatory, and neurological status
  • Maintains oxygenation and patent airway
  • Assessing fluid administration site and appropriate rate
  • Assesses tubes, drains, etc. for patency, drainage amount, character, and position
  • Observe surgical site for bleeding
  • Administers medications safely and accurately
  • Executes physician?s orders specified while in unit in a timely manner
  • Implements patient comfort measures as appropriate (medication for pain and nausea & vomiting, position changes, and temperature control)
  • Documents all observations and nursing care provided accurately and thoroughly on the appropriate forms.
  • Prevents cross-contamination through frequent and proper hand washing using universal precautions
  • Educates patient and family on post-operative instructions
  • Discharges patient according to physician?s orders,
  • patient?s condition, and standards of care
  • Completes post-operative telephone calls and documents in the medical record
  • Performs end of day duties as directed by supervisor
  • Observes cost containment practices; evaluates and maintains appropriate inventory levels.
  • Respects and complies with decisions made by the Executive Director and Clinical Manager; communicates with others in a direct, respectful, and effective manner; will treat customers with actions that exemplify high levels of customer service.
  • Will address and respond to all complaints in a timely manner; will notify Peri-Operative Coordinator or Clinical Manager of any physician or patient complaints.
  • Will participate in the QI plan as directed by the Clinical Manager and comply with Quality Improvement and Adverse incident reporting.
  • Actively participates in staff meetings and in-services and professional organizations.

EDUCATION:

  • Current Michigan RN license
  • Graduate of accredited School of Nursing preferred


SPECIALIZED
KNOWLEDGE:

  • BCLS required
  • ACLS and PALS preferred, will train
  • Minimum of three years experience in PACU preferred
  • Ambulatory Surgery experience preferred

Motor, sensory and physical requirements:

  • Ability to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time.
  • Manual dexterity required to operate modern office and exercise equipment.
  • Employee must have normal or correctible range of hearing and eyesight.
  • Lifting 100 lbs. maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
