Southside Behavioral Health is seeking a qualified and experienced psychiatrist to work at the agency’s behavioral health locations. This individual will provide psychiatric services to clients dealing with mental health, substance use disorders, and behavioral health issues. The psychiatrist will work with the behavioral health, substance abuse, nursing staff, and emergency service clinicians to provide the best possible therapeutic services to the clients that are served by this agency.


Evaluates by interviewing patient, family and other persons; conducting physical examinations; observing behaviors; reviewing medical history and related documents; selecting, administering, and interpreting psychological test; ordering laboratory tests and evaluating results for individuals with severe mental illness. Develops and approves treatment plans by determining nature and extent of cognitive, emotional, developmental, social, and behavioral disorders; establishing treatment goals and methodologies. Provides psychiatric and medical assessment to individuals to determine current mental status, psychiatric needs and needs for other support and therapeutic services. Evaluates individuals for medication and prescribes medication. Monitors Body Mass Index (BMI) and coordinates with agency staff to refer individuals for BMI follow up and primary care screenings.


Doctor of Medicine from an accredited medical school. Licensed within six months of hire date in the State of Virginia to practice medicine. Board certified or board eligible. Must possess effective communication/documentation skills, valid driver’s license, ability to maintain strict confidentiality, and meet all criminal background and drug screening requirements. Comprehensive knowledge of serious mental illness and substance abuse issues, including personality and developmental disorders of adults, children and adolescents. Comprehensive knowledge of psychotropic medication effects and potential side effects. Knowledge of current diagnostic, statistical manual and CMS coding requirements for evaluation and management services, is required. Will assist with relocation expenses.
