Agency Information: Osawatomie State Hospital (OSH) is licensed by the State of Kansas to provide care and treatment for adults diagnosed with psychiatric disorders regardless of ability to pay. OSH serves individuals from 36 counties in Kansas in collaboration with 12 Community Mental Health Centers (CMHCs). The centers refer individuals for admission to the hospital through a collaborative screening process. There are currently two hospitals on the Osawatomie campus in Miami county: Osawatomie State Hospital and Adair Acute Care.

Position Summary & Responsibilities


Position Summary:
The Osawatomie State Hospital is seeking a Physician (Psychiatrist) to provide care for our patients. The Physician will provide psychiatric, and to some extent, medical services. Physician will admit, evaluate and treat patients. The Physician will enter required assessment, treatment and discharge planning documentation in the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Physician will enter medication orders on the WinPharm pharmacy system. Physician will actively participate in the individualized multidisciplinary treatment process and discharge planning. Physiican will prepare court reports in collaboration with the treatment team and will attend court hearings as expert witness. Physician will provide administrative and clinical coverage for the Clinical Director such as reviews of screens, triage coverage, and chart reviews.


Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:


Patient Care:
Admit patients. On a timely basis, complete and document admission paperwork which includes, but are not limited to, psychiatric evaluations, medication orders, allergy form, medication reconcilliation, observation status, dietary orders, diagnostic orders, consultations, and others. Include diagnostic criteria to support the psychiatric diagnoses. Appropriately assess and treat the patients' psychiatric and medical needs, pain management, dangerousness to self and others. Prescribe medicaitons according to established evidence based practices and consider relevant facotrs such as safety profiles, effectiveness and cost. Educate patients on medications and other treatment interventions. Order diagnostic tests and document ICD-10 based diagnoses/symptoms to justify medical necessity. Utilize clinically appropriate, timely and cost effective consultations with peers, medical consultants, and outside consultants/treators. Assess patients and order seclusion and restraint when needed. Complete descriptive court reports and provide court testimony as needed. Provide ongoing evaluation of patients' psychiatric needs to optimize patient safety and quality of life, and facilitate discharge planning. Respond to emergency medical conditions such as Dr. Heart and Code 2. Document actions in the EHR or in appropriate hospital forms, in accordance with hospital policies and procedures and regulations by accrediting agencies such as Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services (CMS).


Teamwork:
Collaborate with other physicians, clinical and other hospital staff. Actively participate in multidisciplinary treatment planning and treatment review meetings, and in discharge planning. Respond to inquiries, concerns of patients/significant others on a timely basis. Collaborate with administrative and executive clinical committee members on matters regarding patient care with community agencies such as other hospitals, community mental health centers, insurance providers. Participate in hospitalwide and medical staff committees when needed.


Coverage ad On Call Responsibilities:
Provide coverage for another physician when requested. Provide on call coverage when needed to ensure adequate physician coverage. As on call physician, respond on a timely basis to address standard and emergency psychiatric and/or medical situations. Respond to doctor to doctor calls and other requests from physicians and healthcare providers in the community. Consult with the medical consultants as needed. Determine patients' need for a higher level of care; coordinate care with other physicians or with outside agencies such as Miami County Medical Center. Assess patients in seclusion and/or restraints and complete orders in accordance with hospital procedure. Utilize telephone consultation wiht the Superintendent, CEO, Clinical Director, Nursing Director or other administrative staff as appropriate. Report to the above leaders significant safety or critical incidents/situations such as significant injuries, elopepments, deaths.


A. Performance Improvement; B Compliance with Procedures and Regulations; C Documentation:

A. Be familiar with, and participate in the hospital's performance improvement activities. Participate in special assignments such as committees. Participate in staff education opportunities.

B. Attend meetings on consistent manner. Be knowledgeable of, and comply with hospital policies and procedures; Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA); CMS regulations; other applicable federal and state regulations of accrediting and/or oversight organizations or legal requirements to which the hospital is subject to; Governing Body and Medical Staff Bylaws. Abide by the ethical standards set by the American Medical Association, American Psychiatric Association, Kansas State Board of Healing Arts, and the KDADS Human Resources Division.

C. Complete psychiatric evaluations within 24 hours of admission. Document progress notes on a daily basis during regularly scheduled week days. Progress notes should be individualized and show patient' response to medications and progress in treatment; medical necessity for continued hospitalization; and will have the requirement information to support physician billing charges. For discharge patients, complete the discharge summaries as soon as possible, no later than 30 days after discharge. Learn how to use the EHR, the Dragon Dication Software. Authenticate telephone orders on the WinPharm and the medical records no later than within 72 hours. Effectively maximize and optimize use of time.


Administrative Responsibilities:
Provide adminstrative and clinical back up for the Clinical Director such as triage functions, screen reviews, chart reviews.


Competency and Licensure:
Maintain licensure, credentialing and privileging requirements. Attend required training on the use of seclusion and restraint. Complete all hospital training requirements in a timely manner. These include, but are not limited to, hospital wide orientation, discipline specific orientation, annual EXPO training, Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training, and CPR. Complete the required CME credits required by the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts. Maintain completency e.g., with current evidence based psychopharmacology and medical practices, DMS V, and utilize this knowledge in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.


Qualifications

  • Education: Completion of medical school training and residency in Psychiatry.
  • Licensing & Certification: Current active medical license in Kansas.

  • Minimum Qualifications: Completion of medical school training. Completion of residency in Psychiatry in an approved training program, or at least two years of approved residency training program. Current active medical license in Kansas. Knowledge and experience in the use of psychiatric and medical medications. Ability to work with other physicians and other hospital staff.
