The City of Auburn Finance Department is looking for a talented Payroll Specialist to add to our team! In this position, you will do accounting and advanced clerical work with the City payroll preparation, compilation, and verification of associated reports, with maintenance of records.
Our ideal candidate is detail oriented, provides great internal customer service, has technical accounting knowledge, and full-cycle payroll experience.
In this role you will:
Perform technical accounting duties in order to compute and enter all aspects of payroll including, but not limited to, downloading timesheets into a financial system; balancing hours between systems, auditing timesheets; entering employee maintenance, benefits, and deductions; computing payout figures, adjustments, and garnishments; and processing payroll.
Audit information entered into the payroll system to ensure City Policy, Collective Bargaining Agreements, and Federal and State Laws are followed.
Reconcile and disburse checks to insurance companies, Social Security, the State Retirement system, deferred compensation, and other agencies as required.
Compile, reconcile, and forward required State and Federal reports quarterly and annually.

We are looking for candidates who:
- Have an Associate's Degree in Accounting or closely related field
- Have three (3) years of full-cycle payroll experience
- Have any combination of relevant education, experience, and training that demonstrates the ability to successfully perform the essential duties of this position.

The City buildings are currently closed through the end of March 2021 in an effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19. While we are anticipating and preparing to reopen our buildings, we acknowledge that it's important to prepare for all possibilities.
The City's office hours are Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with an hour for lunch. With the current state of COVID-19, the work will be performed in a combination of onsite and remote environments. With training and the uncertainty of when buildings will reopen, flexibility will be paramount in the near future and beyond. You will be provided with a City issued laptop as well as a telecommute agreement, and will be required to maintain a workspace with an internet connection where you can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours when working from home.
Under the general supervision of the Accounting and Financial Reporting Manager I, you'll work independently to accomplish payroll functions using standard policies and procedures. New or unusual cases or questions of policy are referred to the supervisor for resolution.
