Performs a variety of work in all areas of park operations including law enforcement, information, interpretation, public relations, conservation, and maintenance in City parklands.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Assures park visitors a pleasant, safe, and educational experience. Presents programs on park activities and resources to park visitors, schools, civic groups, and other organizations. Provides information to park visitors concerning park operations, programs, policies, facilities, resources, and tourist information. Provides media services with information as requested.
Coordinates parks activities and assists with recreational programs, scouts projects, volunteer activities, etc. on city parklands. Supports programs by providing minor technical assistance and advance preparation of programs.
Collects, transfers, and deposits revenues taken in by park facilities and events. Checks and verifies all park cash supplies and revenues. Obtains monies as needed for concession operations. Orders and restores concessions, brochures, park equipment, and supplies as needed.
Assists with studies, surveys, and reports on various problems and proposed decisions impacting parklands and other recreational facilities, policies, and programs. Makes recommendations as needed.
Assists in building park structures, trails, and related facilities as needed. Assists in planning and implementing landscaping in various park areas. Assists in obtaining materials and coordinating funding for projects.
Maintains, repairs, and rebuilds existing park structures, facilities, and equipment as needed. Assists in maintaining bridges, docks, piers, grills, picnic tables, trails, shelters, signs, boats, bicycles, and related park structures and recreational equipment. Ensures that patrol vehicles and emergency equipment such as firefighting apparatus, chainsaws, radios, etc. is operational and in proper working condition. Performs basic maintenance of restrooms and other facilities in the absence of maintenance staff. Arranges for resolution of more complex problems or repairs by contracting and/or contacting the appropriate maintenance personnel.
Patrols park, recreation, and other city properties to ensure the safety of the people using these facilities as well as to protect the security and integrity of parkland and city resources, property, and equipment. Patrols by foot, watercraft, or vehicle as needed to best respond to the situation at hand. Identifies and takes action to correct hazardous or dangerous situations, objects, places, or persons. Completes related paperwork. Checks buildings and trails during non-operational hours to ensure security; monitors and responds to alarms in park facilities.
Enforces all state and federal fish and game regulations. Checks and tags game animals in compliance with state law. Checks fishing licenses and ensures proper size and limits on freshwater fish removed from city-owned waters.
Assists with training seasonal staff. Assists in developing and implementing training programs and schedules.
Performs other related duties as required
Graduation from high school or successful completion of GED is required. Minimum of one (1) year of experience in park operations and maintenance is required. One (1) year of experience in law enforcement required. Some knowledge of environmental issues, conservation, and wildlife management. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Must successfully complete the Hampton Roads Regional Academy of Criminal Justice or an equivalent state certified police academy. May be required to qualify with firearms annually. Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria. Must successfully pass a background check related to this position. Any person offered employment with the city in this position shall be required to successfully pass testing for controlled substances. Any acceptable combination of experience and education which qualifies the applicant for this particular position may be considered for the more specific requirements outlined above.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION Performs duties under the general supervision of the chief park ranger. Frequent contact with the general public. Requires shift work and working nights, week-ends, and holidays. Duties are performed out of doors in a variety of weather conditions. Frequent walking, lifting weights up to 70 pounds with occasional requirements for much heavier lifting. This is a non-exempt position.
