Marketing Consultant, Self Funded – San Francisco, CA 94105

We are looking for an experienced Marketing Professional for Self-Funded Marketing. Self-Funded represents our large group clients and is one of the key strategic initiatives of the organization.

The role of Consultant, Marketing Acquisition will be a dedicated, proactive marketing partner with sales to position, promote and grow Self-Funded business opportunities with consultants, brokers and employers. The role requires skills and proficiency in health care and strong knowledge of sales strategies. The successful candidate will be customer focused and able to identify customer needs and develop complex marketing campaigns, programs and communication to support sales and account management teams and ultimately, membership growth initiatives. This vital role will lead the development of marketing plans that align to the overall strategy, creating a differentiated, sustainable value prop targeted to the Self-Funded market. Success will be predicated on building cross functional working relationships with sales, subject matter experts and stakeholders across the organization, at all levels. A dynamic marketing professional who is a go-getter, creative, and passionate about health care and marketing will be the ideal fit for this role.

This is an exciting opportunity to own complex marketing projects from end to end. The role works closely with Premier Accounts, Core Accounts, Channel Partners/TPA, Labor and Trust and various internal departments across the organization and within Marketing. Also interfaces with external parties in the development of marketing acquisition materials. The individual will be responsible for a variety of marketing activities, including developing strategies, tactical planning, project oversight, messaging and creative execution. Attention to detail and an eye for quality, and the ability to be customer focused is critical.

This role will report to the Director of Marketing Strategy and will play a key role in delivering strategies and collaborating on growth to achieve multiyear membership goals.


  • Responsible for shaping, communicating and marketing the value prop from sell-in (first sale) to sell through (implementation) for the Self- Funded audience.

  • Lead the development and implementation of marketing campaigns and communications strategies focused on large self-funded purchasers with a focus on big picture goals and growing self-funded membership. May be responsible for presenting recommendations to senior executives.

  • End-to-end development of marketing campaigns: writing the creative brief, partnering with the content team to develop and refine messaging and positioning, selecting tactics (email, online, social, print, etc.).

  • Work collaboratively with internal partners (Sales, Account Management, legal, Customer Service, HCQA, network, product, content and creative teams, etc.) to strategize, plan, and ensure successful execution of a variety of marketing campaigns and programs to meet business and corporate goals. Because this position will work with Blue Shield executives/functional leaders on a regular basis and may receive guidance other key leaders, building and maintaining cross-functional relationships is a key component to success.

  • Operate autonomously but in a way that is collaborative and integrative with overall direction/strategy.

  • Engage and lead the creation of messaging platforms and build sales presentations to present at an executive leadership level.

  • Ensures campaign deliverables are delivered on time and on budget.

  • Utilize data to optimize campaigns and recommend metrics to meet goals and objectives.

  • Manage internal and external vendor relationships as appropriate.

Office Environment – roles involving part to full time schedule in Office Environment. Based in our physical offices and work from home office/deskwork – Activity level: Sedentary, frequency most of work day.
