Shu Ren International School is looking for a full-time Mandarin-speaking teacher assistant for the 2019-20 school year. Teacher assistants provide clerical and instructional support in classrooms, allowing the homeroom teacher to devote more time to lesson planning and teaching. They work under the guidance and supervision of the homeroom teacher or school administrators. Some assistants provide non-instructional support. Their tasks are largely housekeeping: putting the classroom in order; cleaning tables and classrooms, and preparing bulletin boards. They may also take attendance, update health records, monitor study hall, and recess duty. This is a full-time position which is eligible for full benefits after 90 days of probation (paid school and federal holidays, sick leave, personal days, vacation leave and 401(k) plan with school matching).
RESPONSIBILITIESshall include, but not be limited to the following:
- Assisting in the implementation of the daily program under the direction of the homeroom teacher.
(1) Assisting the homeroom teacher on an instructional level. Reinforce the instruction the homeroom teacher provides to the students. Work with some students on an individual basis or in small groups.(2) Assisting in planning and preparing the learning environment. Where necessary this may include setting up interest centers and preparing needed materials and supplies. Perform clerical tasks, including filing student records, typing, taking attendance, making copies, checking/grading tests and homework, distributing classroom-related materials and setting up bulletin boards. Make sure the classroom materials (including toys, furniture, art supplies, etc) are put away neatly.(3) Supervising the classroom when the homeroom teacher is out of the room. Help the homeroom teacher establish order. Whether it is in the classroom, school cafeteria, playground or on school-related field trips, teachers need assistance in monitoring students’ behavior and addressing inappropriate conduct. Follow the classroom rules that are set up by the homeroom teacher, so the students follow the rules consistently. The teaching assistant’s authority regarding discipline is limited—informing the teacher of a behavior problem will help them determine the best way to handle the situation. The teacher assistant needs to inform parents and report to the homeroom teacher when something happens under their supervision.(4) Helping with general housekeeping and kitchen tasks. Perform housekeeping tasks in the classroom. Duties include cleaning whiteboards, cleaning erasers, picking up trash, cleaning up art projects and sanitizing countertops. (5) Supervising outside playground activities. Accompany and supervise students going on bathroom breaks and to the library, recess, and other activities. This affords the homeroom teacher extra time to grade papers or write lesson plans. (6) Helping with the operations of audio/visual aids (projectors, etc.). Help operate special equipment used for instruction, including computers, televisions, projectors, film projectors, cassette tape and/or CD recorders and players, VCRs, DVD players, and other audiovisual equipment. (7) Assisting the homeroom teacher in any other way that may be required.
(1) Treating all children with dignity and respect.(2) Maintaining confidentiality about children, their families, and other employees, outside of school.(3) Attending all staff meetings and recommended training programs and conferences.(4) Participating in professional workshops(5) Maintaining a professional attitude and loyalty to the school.(6) Follow directions given by homeroom teacher or immediate supervisor.
