The Department of Public Works, Buildings and Grounds Division, is seeking an exceptional maintenance worker to join a dynamic team that specializes in innovative, responsible and environmentally sound grounds maintenance practices. Help us maintain the exterior beauty of our facilities by assisting with various turf, landscaping and asphalt projects all while providing excellent customer service to County residents and employees. Buildings and Grounds employees are essential personnel. Candidates selected for hire must pass a health physical and Police background check to include drug test, fingerprints, credit check and employment verification.

STARTING ENTRY SALARY: $29,893.50 – $40,326.00

PREFERRED SKILLS:
A. Direct experience maintaining turf, asphalt replacement and repair, light construction, painting and snow removal
B. Superior time management skills, ability to complete task(s) within assigned timeframe
C. Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques of grounds maintenance.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must pass pre-employment physical examination;
Must be at least 18 years of age to perform duties which involve handling, applying or otherwise working with hazardous materials such as, but not limited to, larvicides, where applicable;
Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds regularly; up to 80 pounds occasionally; and up to 125 pounds as applicable.
Responds to emergencies after normal working hours, as needed.

General Definition of Work, Typical tasks, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The statements in this class specification are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by incumbent(s) assigned to this classification. GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

Performs responsible semi-skilled work in a variety of maintenance, construction, and repair assignments.
Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Department Director or designee. Supervision may be exercised over unskilled helpers.

TYPICAL TASKS:

Performs rough carpentry work;
Performs various street maintenance duties such as cleaning and repairing gutters, and patching holes; sets forms for concrete; replaces broken curb, gutter and sidewalks;
Paints, repairs, installs traffic signs, barricades and other traffic control devices;
Spray-paints road markings, loads painting materials and supplies;
Constructs and raises brick manholes;
Prunes and transplants trees and shrubs, mows green areas and related grounds maintenance work; picks up paper and debris on public property and streets;
Performs snow and/or removal as assigned;
Fills, grades, seeds and sods disturbed areas;
Uses chemical fertilizers, pesticides in general maintenance activities and pest controls under guidance of licensed applicator;
Repairs and maintains tools and equipment of a less complex nature;
Disburses fuel; transfers furniture, supplies and materials between County locations;
Operates light automotive and mechanical equipment in connection with the above tasks; drives truck on occasion to haul gravel and dirt;
May repairs, replaces, maintains and installs storm drain lines, sewer and water lines, and related facilities;
May dig shallow trenches and ditches, cleans catch basins, manholes and storage drain lines;
May act as yard attendant.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Some knowledge of a variety of maintenance and manual tasks involved in masonry, carpentry, plumbing, painting and other trades; some knowledge in the use of common hand and power tools; some knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of common automotive and mechanical equipment;
ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions;
ability to lift and carry objects up to 125 pounds;
ability to understand and follow specific instructions;
ability to lead the work of others;
ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Education and Experience

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of seventh grade and 1-2 years of experience as a laborer in the maintenance, repair and/or construction activities applicable to work assignments.

Must possess a CDL License or ability to obtain one, to include alcohol and controlled substances tests per Federal Transit
Administration Mandate Title 49 Transportation §382.Subpart C, if applicable to the position;
Must possess a valid driver’s license, if applicable to work assignment;
