The Missouri Labor and Industrial Relations Commission (LIRC) is seeking a Missouri-licensed attorney to fill a full-time legal counsel position. Applicants must be licensed to practice law in the state of Missouri and be a member of the Missouri Bar in good standing. Primary duties involve legal research and writing pertaining to the various administrative appeals adjudicated by the LIRC, including unemployment insurance and workers’ compensation. Excellent writing skills a must. Some prior experience with or knowledge of Missouri workers’ compensation law is highly preferred.
Responsibilities will include legal research and drafting legal memoranda, as well as proposed orders and decisions for the LIRC or for a particular Commissioner; answering various legal questions posed by Commissioners, LIRC staff, and the public pertaining to the LIRC’s work of adjudicating appeals; assisting in oral arguments before the LIRC; and answering telephone inquiries from parties to appeals pending before the LIRC, as well as general inquiries from the public.

Prospective candidates should demonstrate excellent legal research and writing skills; a high level of professionalism and good judgment in interactions with Commissioners, LIRC staff, and the public; proficiency and/or an ability to learn and effectively utilize computer software including LexisNexis, the Microsoft Office Suite, and Adobe Acrobat; excellent time management skills including an ability to honor deadlines and manage and prioritize multiple projects; and a high level of trustworthiness with confidential information. Some prior knowledge of Missouri workers’ compensation law is highly preferred, while some familiarity with Missouri administrative law and process would also be helpful. An individual who enjoys writing, and who possesses the qualities of self-motivation, critical thinking, and creativity will thrive in this role.
