Legacy Prep is a part of Legacy Schools, a non-profit emerging public charter school network in the Birmingham metro area. Legacy Prep, opening for the 2019-20 academic year is the first and only approved public charter school in Birmingham, Alabama. Over the long term, Legacy Schools plans to serve students from grades PreK-12 in multiple schools across the city. Legacy is proud to be one of the trailblazers for the charter sector across the state.

We’re looking for four Elementary Legacy Fellows for the 2019-20 school year. As a Fellow, also known as a co-teacher, you will be responsible for supporting lead teachers and ensuring that our students have the opportunity to learn in an environment of joyful, excellent teaching. The teachers we are looking for will have experience working with kids and are willing to work hard for them. They will have the passion and drive to work with students and put them on a path to college and any path of their choosing. Here’s what you will get: A one-year program that integrates exceptional academic preparation and practical teaching experience, experience with working with a master teacher at a high performing charter school, time to teach students in early childhood, experience being part of a high functioning team, and ongoing professional development and coaching to get you to be a lead teacher long-term. Legacy Fellows will report directly to the School Leader and/or Director of Teaching and Learning.


  • Perform daily teaching tasks such as: conducting morning meetings, monitoring lunch, substituting, and any of the other things that make you awesome at your job
  • Be a good teammate – work closely with other teachers and team members to create a cohesive school culture of success and family
  • Work with small groups, individual students, and eventually whole classes for individual lessons
  • Receive individual coaching from a lead teacher and the instructional coach
  • Update student performance trackers and rely on data to make decisions
  • Lead Guided Reading groups throughout the year

Curriculum and Instruction

  • In collaboration with grade level team, plan and execute a rigorous, standards-aligned curriculum that assesses students’ progress
  • Support the collection of data to inform instructional decisions
  • Teach small groups of students ; Support students by providing one-on-one and small group tutoring daily, and small group intervention and student support
  • Perform clerical duties, and other classroom responsibilities as needed, that serve to advance student learning
  • Demonstrate passion for pedagogy

  • Work collaboratively with your school team
  • Help maintain classroom culture and school-wide culture that best fits the needs of our students, teachers and families
  • Attend and participate in all staff meetings and communicate openly with staff
  • Develop positive rapport with students
  • Create and foster a positive and calm learning environment
  • Enforce, uphold, and exhibit school’s values, student management policies and culture
  • Participating in collaborative curriculum development, grade-level activities, and school-wide functions, events, and trips
  • Supervising students during transitions, breakfast, lunch and recess
  • Provide substitute teaching coverage for teachers within the school

Family Engagement

  • Establish and maintain strong communication lines with all parents and share progress
  • Be available for open houses, parent teacher conferences and other events involving parents

  • Pursue challenging professional goals
  • Willing to offer support and receive regular constructive feedback from colleagues in order to create a professional working atmosphere that is conducive to change and improvement
  • Participate in school-wide and individual professional development, including Staff Institute over the summer and weekly during the academic year (held during school hours)


  • Current undergraduate seniors must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and post graduates must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year educational institution
  • Candidates who have 0-2 years of experience are eligible to apply
  • Experience working with students from educationally under-resourced communities (preferred)
  • A record leadership in or outside of school
  • On track for teacher certification
  • A collaborative attitude towards teaching and learning, and receiving feedback
  • The ability to be flexible in a new school environment where things change all the time
  • Can thrive in a startup, entrepreneurial environment

The Legacy Fellow compensation structure is based on a stipend. Although Legacy does not post salary scales, we are happy to walk candidates through the compensation package.
