Housing Specialist – New York, NY 10009


  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience working in a social service or housing agency
  • Counseling experience and knowledge of low income housing programs
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and work well with people
  • Good judgment and problem solving ability
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Must be able to work some evenings and holidays


  • Serve as an advocate for individuals with housing related issues
  • Assist residents in accessing permanent housing, obtaining necessary documentation and preparing for housing interviews
  • Must complete a minimum of twenty housing package per month
  • Escort individuals to apartment viewing, interviews, and lease signing
  • Inspect housing sites as needed
  • Have experience with the DHS CARES system
  • Liaise with the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) and maintain existing database of housing agents/realtor contacts
  • Establish new connections with landlords and other housing agents
  • Make appointments with landlords and other housing agents to ensure individuals have housing leads
  • Design and facilitate workshops to establish residents’ competency skills for permanent housing such as: budgeting, community networks and resources, housekeeping/home repairs, landlord/tenant rights and interviewing skills
  • Maintain records and counsel session logs in DHS Cares system
  • Maintain statistical information regarding referrals, applications and support services to the permanent housing placements, as well as the timely submission of all required program reports as mandated by agency policy
  • Facilitate weekly housing workshops
  • Supervise the Consumer Advocate
  • Provide after-care service
  • Other related duties as assigned by supervisor
