Forestry Fire Warden – Forestry – McDowell Co. – McDowell County, WV

Department of Commerce/ Division of Forestry, McDowell Co. – Under general supervision, performs full-performance work involving responsibility for wildfire prevention, control and suppression activities in a designated geographic project area. Will be responsible for establishing and maintaining a network of employees for emergencies. Directs forest fire suppression efforts and performs preliminary investigations of forest fires. Recruits, trains and maintains a volunteer network of community firefighters and local fire departments, mobilizing and directing fire crews in response to wildfires under potentially hazardous conditions, over rugged terrain, which may require extended periods of duty. Checks equipment utilized by Forest Fire Wardens, patrollers and firefighters. Recruits, trains and supervises temporary employees during established fire seasons. Promotes public awareness through speaking engagements, exhibits and displays of forest resource and protection programs. Evaluates requests for and issues industrial burning permits. Performs inspections, makes recommendations and/or directs measures required to contain fires in refuse disposal areas and in underground mine fire access to prevent forest fire occurrence. Training: Graduation from a standard four-year high school or the equivalent.

Experience: Two years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid or voluntary experience in wildfire suppression and prevention, forestry, conservation or related field.

Associate degree in a Forestry Technology program recognized by the Society of American Foresters from a regionally accredited college or university.

Special Requirements: Must be licensed or eligible to be licensed to operate a motor vehicle in West Virginia. Must take and pass a physical examination within the first six months of employment and submit to annual follow-up examinations. Failure to pass the initial examination will result in termination of employment. Failure to pass a subsequent examination may result in reassignment.

Positions must meet the qualifications for and become a Special Natural Resources Police Officer at the earliest opportunity following employment and maintain this commission throughout the period of employment in the position. This requirement may be waived at the discretion of the State Forester.
