Fitness Program Specialist – Morrisville, NC


Performs responsible programmatic and administrative work in the development, scheduling and implementation of a fitness and recreation programs within the community. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Community Center Supervisor. Assists with supervision over facility, part-time staff and volunteers.

Examples of Duties

Identifies equipment needs for the facility in the fitness area.

Inspects equipment and performs maintenance and repair on fitness equipment.

Provides oversight for participants engaged in use of the facility.

Provides orientation and guidance in the use of the equipment.

Develops engaging and innovative programs as incentives to participants.

Leads group exercise classes.

Participates in front desk activities such as membership processing, RecTrac processing and customer service.

Creates and executes new programming for wellness.

Assists with events and other aspects of department’s programming.

Assists with planning, organization and direction of a variety of programs, activities, events and part-time staff; assists peers with work schedules, program coverage and events as necessary.

Enforces department policies and procedures.

Offers recommendations toward establishment of fees.

Provides direct supervision of staff and volunteers.

Assists in planning and implementation of staff and volunteers training and development.

Offers recommendations and relevant information in the development of facility and program budgets.

Maintains accurate inventory of supplies and equipment.

Assists in hiring and evaluation of facility part-time employees and volunteers.

Inspects equipment and facility to ensure proper condition and safety.

Reports on custodial contract performance, maintenance requests and security activities.

Monitors location and use of supplies and equipment. Ensures proper use of equipment.

Prepares and maintains appropriate files and records.

Processes and seeks resolution to complaints and disputes in a professional and courteous manner.

Performs other related tasks as required.

Typical Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of the operation of a major recreation facility; thorough knowledge of indoor and outdoor recreation programs and related rules and regulations; thorough knowledge of fitness programs and the ability to demonstrate use of related equipment; ability to plan participant-specific routines and programs; ability to maintain equipment; ability to operate and maintain order in a public facility; ability to communicate ideas effectively both orally and in writing; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, participants, community organizations and the general public.

Supplemental Information

An equivalent combination of education and experience to graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in Parks and Recreation Management, kinesiology, physical education, sports management or related field with experience in fitness, personal training.

Possession of a valid driver’s license in the State of North Carolina.

Possession of CPR and First Aid certifications are required. Certification as a personal trainer and/or group exercise instructor by a recognized organization, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
