Bachelor’s degree and experience in Environmental, Health and Safety compliance or equivalent training, education, licensure/certification and field experience will be considered.
The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist supports the department to reach compliance with a variety of regulations as it relates to the safety of the University environment. The role will implement EHS programs and promote compliance practices to achieve program excellence in an atmosphere of continuous improvement. The EHS Specialist will assist in managing the university’s comprehensive safety plan and provide support with periodic program and plan updates. The Specialist will demonstrate knowledge of and provide assistance and support during the development and review of departmental safety programs as well as ensure necessary inspection and audit activities are completed as required. The EHS Specialist will act as a representative of Environmental Health and Safety in interactions with the campus community. The Specialist will also work with the Lab Safety Officer for all the required inspection processes for chemical storage, safety showers, eye washes, and fume hoods and ensure proper record-keeping. The EHS Specialist will also provide assistance with management of regulated and hazardous materials and waste, its storage and response to spills. The Specialist will compile data and conduct initial investigations for incidents, injuries, and general complaints concerning potential hazards or unsafe conditions in the work place. The EHS Specialist will identify, assess, and monitor workplace hazards (including but not limited to, chemical, physical, biological, radiological) that could be present in the work area and recommend improvements to minimize hazard potential. There will also be responsibility for records management, auditing and reporting as required by federal, state, local regulations and university policies. Working with a diverse group of constituents, the work encompasses preparation and conduct of occupational safety programs including in-class and online training.
Knowledge of Occupational Safety Health Administration and Environmental Protection Agency regulations. Working knowledge and understanding of chemicals, hazardous waste streams and associated hazards. Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to draft, edit, and produce a variety of documents such as training manuals and compliance reports. Experience in applying safety principles. Experience with computers, specifically with Microsoft Office programs.
Preference given for prior experience in the Environmental Health and Safety field. Preference given for certification as an Associate Safety Professional ( ASP ), Certified Safety Professional ( CSP ), Certified Hazardous Material Manager ( CHMM ), Certified Industrial Hygienist ( CIH ), or other field related certifications. Progressive experience in Environmental Health and Safety in an academic setting. Experience in developing and/or conducting training programs. Knowledge of Chemical Hygiene and Laboratory Safety Standards. Demonstrated experience in occupational and construction safety.
