Director of Systems Engineering Antora Energy, Inc. Antora Energy, Inc.

Antora Energy is an early-stage startup on a mission to move electricity grids worldwide away from fossil fuels and towards clean, renewable energy by commercializing affordable, reliable energy storage. Our team has created an ultra-low-cost storage technology by combining extremely inexpensive thermal storage media with a high-efficiency thermophotovoltaic heat engine. When wind and solar electricity is in excess, it is used to heat an inexpensive storage medium, where energy is stored as heat for hours or days. When consumers demand power, photovoltaic cells are used to capture the thermal radiation emanating from the hot storage medium and convert it back into electricity. This approach results in costs 10X lower than Li-ion batteries. Antora Energy is committed to building a diverse and creative team dedicated to making the world a better place.

Position Summary:
We are seeking an exceptionally driven and passionate individual to lead the development of our solid-state thermal battery system. Specifically, you will be the technical lead overseeing full-scale prototype and pilot systems. You will be a key technical member of a cross-functional and rapidly growing organization. Your work will directly contribute to the demonstration of a first of a kind long-duration energy storage technology.

Roles and responsibilities:
  • Lead internal and external system engineering efforts

    • Internal: Antora system engineering team, cost modeling, system modeling, unit designs, risk table, cohesive test plan creation based on system risks, fundraising priorities
    • External: third-party engineering firms, contractors, component vendors, supply chain
  • Manage the design, build, testing, and analysis of full-system prototypes in Antora’s facility
  • Lead the design and testing of pilot systems at customer sites
  • Manage the design, build-out, out-sourcing and/or testing of critical sub-systems
  • Analyze and integrate technical, economic, and market factors; synthesize results into optimal R&D and engineering roadmaps that appropriately balance risk, resources, and time
  • Assist in the development and engineering of application-specific system concepts
  • Assist in the refinement and execution of the product development roadmap
  • Work with company leadership and business development to translate customer feedback into engineering and product development workflows

What you’ll need:
  • Extensive experience (e.g. 10+ years) leading complex hardware engineering projects that span multiple engineering disciplines and multiple organizations
  • Extensive experience managing teams of engineers and project managers
  • Proven ability to lead and operate comfortably across many engineering disciplines (e.g. mechanical, electrical, thermal, software)
  • 10+ years of industry experience developing technical solutions to hard problems, or equivalent
  • Bachelors in an engineering or technical field, or equivalent
  • Deep engineering experience and intuition, ideally with a background in:

    • High-temperature thermal systems
    • Energy and power conversion
  • Ideally experience with the entire product development cycle—from concept, through R&D and engineering, to deployment
  • Ideally experience with large-scale engineering efforts (e.g. power plants, grid-scale batteries)
  • Familiarity with structures and processes for effectively managing engineering projects; understanding of their limitations and how to adapt them in flexible, rapidly-changing teams.
  • Passion for urgently developing scalable solutions to fight climate change
  • Comfort with problems you haven’t encountered before, energized by the challenge of solving them
  • Empathy, sensitivity, and ability to effectively interact with a broad and diverse range of colleagues
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Creativity and ability to think critically about unfamiliar problems
  • Dedication to getting the job done, no matter how big or small
  • Compassion and respect for teammates, and excitement for helping those around you
  • Passion for new technologies, renewable energy, and environmental stewardship

    • Vision and dental coverage
    • Life insurance
    • 50% coverage for dependents
    • 401(K) plan
  • A flexible schedule
  • The opportunity to be a leader in a rapidly-growing organization
  • A supportive, respectful, and creative environment
  • The ability to work with a team of kind, energetic, and passionate people
  • The opportunity to work in an environment in which your everyday actions have the potential for an enormous impact in clean energy and climate
