Essential Roles and Responsibilities

1. Building Positive Relationships with Youth

  • develops rapport, listens, and engages youth in daily interaction
  • participates with youth in recreational and other daily activities
  • is available and approachable to youth
  • observes and attends to youths’ needs
  • demonstrates flexibility, fairness and consistency in setting rules and guidelines.

2. Safety & Well-being

  • provide direct supervision of youth
  • respond to and communicate routine and emergency health care issues
  • assess and respond to dangerous situations and conditions
  • consider the youths’ emotional, psychological and physical well being when engaging in activities or interventions. The Teacher/Counselor is responsible to monitor and document youth in self administering medication and ensure dosage timelines are met.

3. Group/Milieu Management

  • manage conflict and facilitate group and individual problem-solving
  • assess and respond to group behavior and dynamics
  • Effectively use group process as opportunities to teach community living skills
  • Plan, implement and evaluate all aspects of daily living routines and activities, including structuring the environment and managing group transitions.

4. Treatment Planning & Implementation

  • participate and collaborate with treatment team members in goal development conduct functional behavioral assessments
  • identify and build upon child’s strengths
  • implement treatment interventions and services
  • teach and role model pro-social behaviors
  • evaluate the effectiveness of treatment interventions and provide feedback
  • provide ongoing advocacy and support for children
  • participate in clinical supervision and implement clinical recommendations

5. Therapeutic and Educational Activities

  • facilitate Short Range & Long Range planning of activities
  • implement planned activities connecting them to the individual and group treatment goals
  • ensure evaluation occurs for each individual activity and overall evaluation of the plan.

6. Professional Development and Training

  • complete all training requirements as identified
  • participate in ongoing professional development in-service trainings
  • participate in clinical supervision;
  • complete the minimum number of annual professional development training hours
  • achieve professional development goals as identified in performance evaluations.

7. Documentation and Record keeping

  • complete all required paperwork in compliance with program, licensing, Medicaid regulations
  • sign off on various documentation per program, licensing and Medicaid regulations
  • complete written work that is legible, accurate and uses professional language meet timelines for submitting paperwork
  • use written documentation to communicate effectively.


Working Conditions

1. Physical Demands. Requires vision, speech, and hearing and a moderate to high level of physical activity including; sitting, standing, walking lifting and carrying as required. Must be able to meet the demands and complete Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI).

2. Environmental Factors. Indoors/Outdoors: Residential treatment facility, school, home, community

3. Working Hours. 40 hour week, variable schedule based on program need


Clearances:
State Police/FBI per state regulations; Child Protection

Valid driver’s license and auto insurance

Education

Required

  • Bachelors or better in Human Services or related field
