This is professional work in a clinical laboratory. Incumbents perform analyses of samples by approved methodologies to generate results in a timely manner. Work is performed under the general direction of a laboratory supervisor.
Examples of Work: Examples of work performed in this classification include, but are not limited to, the following:

Plans and coordinates laboratory activities to obtain data for use in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases.

Assists work of technologists and other laboratory workers and gives general professional advice to ensure compliance of established policies and procedures of the agency.

Performs laboratory procedures as indicated to obtain information from research data in the analysis of diseases.

Complies reports on work completed to provide accurate information to be used in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases.

Reviews and evaluates the work of subordinate personnel to ensure efficient service.

Consults with agency personnel, the public, and service providers as required concerning specimen/sample collection, laboratory results, interpretation, problem resolution, and general information concerning the field.

Performs related or similar duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: These minimum qualifications have been agreed upon by Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in this job class and are based upon a job analysis and the essential functions. However, if a candidate believes he/she is qualified for the job although he/she does not have the minimum qualifications set forth below, he/she may request special consideration through substitution of related education and experience, demonstrating the ability to perform the essential functions of the position. Any request to substitute related education or experience for minimum qualifications must be addressed to the Mississippi State Personnel Board in writing, identifying the related education and experience which demonstrates the candidate's ability to perform all essential functions of the position.

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Education:
A Master's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in microbiology, chemistry, or medical technology;

AND

Experience:
Seven (7) years of experience in a clinical or environmental laboratory.

OR

Education:
A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in microbiology, chemistry, or medical technology combined;

AND

Experience:
Eight (8) years of experience in a clinical or environmental laboratory.

OR

Education:
A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a total of thirty-six (36) semester hours in chemistry, physics, biology, microbiology, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology combined.

AND

Experience:
Eight (8) years of experience in a clinical or environmental laboratory.

OR

Education:
A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university and a valid Certificate in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science Certification from Health and Human Services approved organization.

AND

Experience:
Eight (8) years of experience in a clinical or environmental laboratory.

Documentation Required:

Applicant must attach a valid copy of his/her transcript and/or Certificate in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science Health and Human Services approved organization Certification where applicable. Non-chemistry degree must have a minimum of 18 semester hours of chemistry courses for environmental labs.
