VDOTs Location and Design Division is seeking a Professional Engineer with extensive management experience in highway transportation engineering programs and/or projects to serve as Assistant Director of VDOT’s Project Management Office (PMO). The PMO provides technical project management and engineering support to all Districts by focusing on our four core responsibilities of Program Management, Governance, Training, and Advocacy. The selected candidate will help ensure administrative and technical efficiency and effectiveness of VDOT’s project development program, as well as strategically managing assigned functions to ensure accomplishment of Agency goals and objectives.

Professional Engineering (PE) License is required. Considerable and progressively responsible experience in the management of highway transportation engineering programs and/or projects. Comprehensive knowledge of Civil Engineering principles and practices in areas of highway design such as surveys, hydraulics, traffic engineering, roadway design, consultant management, automated engineering, resource management/allocation, engineering quality control, locally administered projects, and plan development/coordination. Practical knowledge of Project Management principles and practices, focusing on budget, scope, and schedules. Knowledge of organization, administration, and leadership principles and practices. Experience crafting, interpreting, and applying policies and procedures. Experience preparing training materials, and presenting to a wide range of audiences. Customer service minded, creative problem solver who is comfortable driving progress where influence management is critical to success. Proven ability to effectively communicate with diverse groups both orally and in writing. Ability to establish positive and productive working relationships with multiple groups, and stakeholders, especially other functional areas that are engaged in project development and delivery activities across organizational and geographical boundaries.
BS in Civil Engineering is preferred; or college coursework in civil engineering and experience to perform the work may substitute for degree. Project Management Professional (PMP) is preferred. It is preferred that selected candidate has working knowledge of, and experience with, setting and monitoring business and technical performance measures and metrics, as well as developing policies and procedures that guide their development. A working knowledge of database development and management, as well as system integration and data analysis, is also preferred.
