About the Department

The School of Public and International Affairs, in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at North Carolina State University, houses the Department of Public Administration, the Department of Political Science, the Master of International Studies Program, the Public Safety Leadership Initiative, and the Leadership in the Public Sector degree completion program (for more information, see http://spia.chass.ncsu.edu/). The Political Science program offers seven undergraduate degree tracks in which about 600 students are enrolled in any given semester. It offers two minor programs while supporting the Public Administration department in the administration of a third undergraduate minor. It sponsors and supports varied enrichment activities and several student organizations.

Essential Job Duties

The Political Science Department within the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) at North Carolina State University invites applications for an undergraduate academic advising position. This position is a full-time, 12 month appointment.

The successful candidate will provide academic advice to undergraduate Political Science majors and facilitate the effectiveness and consistency of the academic program.


Responsibilities include:

  • Advise undergraduate students in the School of Public and International Affairs and prospective students regarding academic requirements, course selection and registration, and other issues related to academic and student success in a developmentally appropriate way. This responsibility will require the advisor to to utilize a proactive advising approach.
  • Verify completion of degree requirements including approval of substitutions for major requirements and transfer evaluation credit.
  • Help students define academic goals and develop their academic focus within the major while developing an understanding of how to achieve them.
  • Serve as an advisor to departmental minor(s) as needed.
  • Participate in the planning, implementation, and support for curricular and co-curricular programs such as graduation, career exploration, and academic support events.
  • Participate in the University community, particularly in ways strategic to the unit’s mission, including departmental committee work, University Open House, new and transfer student orientation, advisor training and development, and other recruitment events.
  • Understand, interpret, and enforce University, College, and Departmental policies while exploring academic and professional options.
  • Help students make transitions and access full range of university resources

Other Responsibilities
  • Keep abreast of relevant course offerings across the College and campus and maintain connections with student service staff across campus.
  • Act as resource for tenured and tenure-track faculty on issues related to implementation of curricula and academic policies developed by faculty.
  • Serve as a club advisor as needed for departmental student organizations.
  • Actively seek professional development opportunities to maintain and improve knowledge and expertise in advising, teaching, diversity, technology for advising and teaching, and specialty areas
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Experience and Education
  • Bachelor’s degree with at least two years of experience working with college students directly related to advising and academic support. OR Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, student development, or a related field of study.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills including strong communication skills
  • Demonstrated skills in the areas of judgment, decision-making, problem solving, organization, and attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment
  • Knowledge of, or demonstrated ability to learn, University, College and Departmental policies, procedures, and requirements; and understanding of Political Science as an academic discipline
  • Strong communication skills
  • Proficient in social media, excel, word, power point, instructional software (Moodle, Blackboard, Zoom, etc.)
  • Demonstrated understanding of the developmental needs of college students
